I am sure many of you have faced this question before, should I upgrade my old Garmin hand held GPS or not. Aside from people that just got to have the latest gadget, is it worth spending extra $$$ and get the new thing. In the end, we are not talking about few dollars - new 62sct is not cheap, even without build in maps (62sc or 62s) its around $400 (May 2012). Old 60csx may not fetch a good price on Ebay and keeping it might be an option - so we are talking here about cheap laptop size investment.
For new buyers, it might be of note that you can get used 60csx for a bargin on Ebay vs. spending a fortune on new 62-class machine.
Of note is a quick outline of model versions offered by Garmin for hiking: naval units, as they float; Montana class all pretty GPS seies, 62 class rugged series and cheap E-trex GPS sets.
I am mostly concerned with the 62-series GPS models from Garmin, as I have no need for floating GPS, Montana style GPS units are too "fragile" and thus it comes down to 60 vs. 62
Here is a quick comparison:
60csx | 62s | Feature |
similar, touch more | similar, touch less if panning a lot | Battery life |
About half | Twice as many | Waypoints, stored routes etc. |
Almost 2oz more | Lighter | Weight |
Better, no false readings | Somewhat worse, false sat reception indicator | GPS chipset sensitivity |
standard compass... need to move | 3-axis, no need to move | Compass |
More resistant | Somewhat less | Rugedness |
Much more user options | Makes choices for you | Option selection |
So far much better, never locks up | Occasional rare problem | Software stability |
Nope | All there | Nicer maps, ability to share |
In short, unless you especially need some feature of the 62 series the 60 is still a great GPS, no need to upgrade... sort of nice to know that there is no need to spend all that $$$
